Barstool Sports Ranked the Top 10 Female Singers of All Time and People Are Pissed
Nobody can tell if this is a joke or not
Leave it to Barstool to pit successful women against each other, completely unprompted: today, the blog has circulated a very strange list ranking the Top 10 Female Singers of All Time — and people aren't happy about it.
In a "power ranking" — language that feels inherently gross, considering the company's well-documented culture of misogyny (using the word "female" is always a red flag too) — shared to Twitter, Barstool dubbed the following as the ten best vocalists:
1. Mariah Carey
2. Whitney Houston
4. Lady Gaga
5. Aretha Franklin
7. Ashlee Simpson
8. Tina Turner
10. Addison Rae
Where do we even begin?
Well, people are so confused that Ashlee Simpson is now trending on Twitter, and it's probably the first time most of us have thought about her in many moons. (No disrespect — "Pieces of Me" is still a bop.) However, ranking her above Tina Turner is just objectively incorrect on so many levels.
Simpson aside, the straw that really broke the camel's back when it comes to possible trolling is the inclusion of TikTok star Addison Rae, which screams outrage-bait.
According to the attribution at the bottom of the graphic, the company generated their rankings via "data gathered by the ULL." The University of Louisiana at Lafayette? Ultra-Light Lager-heads? The possibilities really are endless.
Thankfully, Barstool elaborated on their rigorous standards for research in an article posted to the blog by Patrick McAuliffe entitled: "Barstool Sports Is Getting Dragged for Its List of 'Top Female Singers of All Time'."
"Some call [the list] controversial, I call it fair," the former Zamboni-driver wrote. "We have a team of highly trained analysts who have dedicated their entire professional lives to creating these kinds of lists, so to see it get dragged by mainstream media is not only sad — it's disappointing."
Right, we should really be thanking them for their service. Braver than the troops.
See some of Twitter's reactions to Barstool's definitive ranking of women (singers) below, including rightful calls for the inclusion of Celine Dion, Patti LaBelle, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and more.
Get Addison Rae and Ashlee Simpson the hell off of where. And where's Patti LaBelle and Celine Dion? https://t.co/jutoV1ygcW— Josh (@Joshua4570) November 17, 2021
The fact that Addison Rae and Ashlee Simpson got any scintilla of a mention here in lieu of Amy Lee, Dolores O'Riordan, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and the like just goes to show how shallow Barstool's brains are. This one is BAD. https://t.co/Rtx5Sb65HS— Cuzz Lightyear (@RyanDesimone) November 16, 2021
Y'all better put some respect on Ashlee Simpson's name…she didn't deliver one of the best albums of 2004 to be mocked by some misogynistic website. pic.twitter.com/DJc0NV77Z0— Jonathan DeBona (@JonDeBona) November 17, 2021
